New Topical Review: Superconducting Photon Detectors

Photo of the Authors Dmitry, Alessandro, Robert (Glasgow, Scotland, 02 March 2022)March 21, 2022 (HP150). Dmitry Morozov, Alessandro Casaburi and Robert Hadfield at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, have published a major topical review in Contemporary Physics (Taylor & Francis).  This review gives an accessible introduction to the physics of photon detection in superconducting materials.  The leading superconducting device technologies for visible and infrared single-photon detection are surveyed: superconducting tunnel junctions, kinetic inductance detectors, transition edge sensors, superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors and hot electron bolometers.  Current and emerging applications in quantum optics, life sciences, remote sensing and astronomy are signposted.  This review is a valuable resource for new researchers and seasoned experts alike.
